QUAD Studio would like to extend our sincere thanks to Henry Chan for inviting our Founding Partner, Wai Tang, to attend the HKDI Architectural Design Showcase 2026.

Reflecting on the event, Wai Tang noted a clear shift in how students are approaching their thesis projects. Many were tasked by their unit tutors to address specific challenges — ranging from innovative modular design solutions to socially driven topics such as rehabilitation for individuals with mobility issues. While these themes are engaging, translating conceptual principles into a coherent architectural proposal within a defined context remains a complex and demanding process.

As a result, some students struggled to deliver fully resolved outcomes, often arriving at proposals that raised as many questions as they answered. Even among the stronger projects, there remains room for further refinement and critical development. In some cases, students became overly focused on producing a technically workable solution, losing sight of the original concept that formed the foundation of their ideas.

That said, several projects stood out. Dominic Choi’s work, despite its imperfections, was particularly notable for its highly engaging and visually compelling presentation panels. Alistar Wong’s modular housing project impressed with its strong form and massing.

A special thanks to Unit Tutor Simon Chan for the opportunity to review his students’ work, as well as to the review panel — Celia Lai, Roger Wu, Peter Hasdell, and Sylvia Lam — for their insightful and constructive feedback throughout the day.
