RIBA Showcase – Windows
QUAD studio was invited by the RIBA HK Chapter to come up with ideas for an art installation on the façade of Po Wah Building. The building is deemed for demolition to make way for a new office tower.
When we visited the site, we saw a lot of history as memories within in the interior spaces. We were captured by the many different activities that that existed simultaneously on the first and second floors of Po Wah Building.
Built in the 1959, the 13-storey block with 8 flats per floor was a common building type along Queen’s Road and throughout the years, the building has gone though many changes as have Wan Chai District. For the installation, we wanted to pay homage to Po Wah Building before it is finally demolished and gone forever.

| Absence
Absence is an installation that reminisce the rich historical context of Wan Chai where the idea of being mixed use takes on another genre. The whole idea is curate a monolith like a projection screen.
During the day, you will see faint images of past nostalgia. When night falls, spotlights inside the room will light up the screen to show another dimension of city life in Wan Chai. Cut out Silhouettes of different activities once occupying that space attached to the window to create an eerie vision of the past hence, we call this installation, the Absence. |
